ROUND 1 GAME 6 – Barrie at Ottawa (4-Apr) – Ottawa Wins, Takes Series 4-2, To Face Sudbury in ROUND 2

67s win 8–2 over the Colts. The game started off on a rush by both sides, but Ottawa scored first, a PP goal by Colbert. Van Herpt got called for a penalty – boarding Hisey – a terrible, dangerous, stupid play by Van Herpt. And then Staubitz boarded Hamilton. (Reid did this last night to give the Colts a 2-man advantage on which they capitalized.) Barrie scored on the 5-on-3. Kaspar then was called for checking from behind! Barrie went back to a 5-on-3. It was looking really rough in the first period, with a lot of undisciplined play and a ton of penalties.

The second period started off with Talbot in the penalty box (10 minute misconduct). Mancari got the go-ahead goal – a blind shot off the circle hash marks that went in. Battochio was making some brilliant saves. Akeson scored to give the 67s their first 2-goal lead of the series (not including the EN the other night). The 67s really picked up their energy level with the second goal – faster off the face-offs, skating quick, fore-checking, leading to a goal scoring explosion. Mancari scored again to make it 4-1. Reid got called for boarding again. McGinn scored on the PP to make it 5-1. Thuot was making some good saves during the 67s’ PP, and Barrie was still playing well at this point – getting their forwards back to help the defensemen, but they couldn’t stop the scoring. The 67s were awarded a 5-on-3, and Mancari scored to get the hat trick (score 6-1). Off the ensuing face-off, Kaspar scored to make it 7-1. The rough play continued – checking from behind by the 67s (Kaspar and Bonello both called for it at the end of the period).

The penalties – and stupid plays that caused them – continued in the third period. Hamilton scored to make it 7-2, with thanks to the boneheaded 67s’ in the penalty box. It’s not like Battochio should have it easy in the third period, with a 6 goal cushion, and after PULLING HIS TEAM THROUGH THE ROUND. Ottawa scored once more (Talbot, 8-2), and that’s the way it ended. Ottawa moves on to ROUND 2. See OHL game summary here.

IN THE NEWS
From the Barrie Examiner Mike Speers writes, Capital punishment!. Snippets:

“We can’t really think of one thing or point a finger at one person,” said Colts captain B.J. Crombeen, who most likely played his last game in a Barrie uniform. “The ref (Mark Hicks) was calling it pretty tight. We took some bad penalties and they took advantage of them.

“Their power play was great tonight. They got some timely goals and just got on a roll.”

While bad bounces and controversial goals may have led to Barrie’s problems in the nation’s capital in the past, it was shoddy defensive play, an inability to score on the power play and the failure of their goalie to come up with the big save when needed that ultimately resulted in them being eliminated after just one round of the OHL playoffs.

From the Ottawa Citizen Chris Yzerman writes, 67's rip Colts, advance to next round. From the Ottawa Sun Barre Campbell writes, 67's to dance with Wolves. Also from the Ottawa Sun Don Brennan writes, 'Tender moment for 67's. And finally, from the London Free Press, Wolves, 67's meet in semis.

PRE-GAME NOTES
The game was broadcast on radio (TEAM 1200/Dave Schreiber and AJ Jakubec) and television (Rogers Television 22/Scott MacArthur, Ed Hand, and Lee Versage).

*Thuot to get the start. Apparently LaCosta broke a finger on his stick hand during the pre-game warm up last night (according to John Bartlett on TEAM 1200/Dean Brown and Gord Wilson this afternoon), and was removed from the game for that reason.

*Little to sit out again. Schreibs and AJ were reporting on their pre-game show that Barrie was saying Little could possibly play if here is a Game 7 in Barrie tomorrow night.

PRE-GAME INTERVIEWS w/TEAM 1200

KILLER /AJ:
(A tough series) Either team could be eliminated. It’s been that tight. We’ve been fortunate. Barrie’s played well.
(On Hisey) You just have to try to outwork him and his line-mates. He’s been doing a great job. He’s playing well. We’ll put Colbert and Joslin and sometimes Reid and Staubitz. It depends on the situation, like PPs.
(Officiating) The referees, whatever happens they’re going to call the game. They get a feel for the game.
(Thuot) You never know what’s going to happen. All I know is that you have to get your shots. We didn’t get a lot of shots, not a lot of good chances.
(On the possibility of a Game 7) You don’t want to play a Game 7 in the other guys’ rink. We’ve played well in our rink and I’m just hoping that it continues.

BRAD BONELLO /Schreibs:
(Need a better effort tonight) Yeah. The last game was pretty disappointing. Lukas and Jakub stepped up and their line was the only one that stepped up besides Danny.
(On playing against Hisey) Just get in his face and play the body with him not the puck or he’ll make you look silly. Be aware of who you are against on the ice. If you get in his face and chirp at him he thrives on that. You just gotta keep him under radar. Keep it quiet don’t talk to him, don’t chirp at him. Just play the body.

DANNY BATTOCHIO /AJ:
(On what you need to do tonight) We have a great chance here at home if we keep it simple and the boys come out to play. We have to forget about what happened last night, and don’t let that beat us. We have to play like we’ve played at home all season long.
(Do you prepare differently) No. It’s just another hockey game. I haven’t changed anything in my play. Just going at it strong, trying to stop pucks.
(Do you focus on Hisey when he is on the ice) I tend to know when he is out on the ice, but they also have a lot of other good players that come along with him. If you give anyone a scoring chance they can put the puck in the net. So I like to give everyone that respect.
(On winning this game) It’s huge. We can’t let them come into our barn and push us around. They’ll have all the momentum.
