67's fall 6-3 to the Gens in a penalty filled game

It's never a dull moment between the Ottawa 67's and the historical division rival Oshawa Generals. When you face a team for the fourth time in two months and both teams are struggling as of late, tension is bound to boil over.  Tonight was no different.

In a midst of their longest losing streak of the season, the Oshawa Generals came out of the gate strong firing 13 shots in the opening frame.  Standing on his head in his 23rd straight start, Philippe Trudeau stopped all shots fired his way. It was scoreless after one.

With a 36-save performance on Saturday night in Belleville, Philippe Trudeau recorded his first career OHL shutout, taking over the league lead in saves in the process in a 5-0 win.

The Ottawa 67’s may have saved their wildest game of 2013 until the third-last game of the calendar year, but fell short to the Kingston Frontenacs for the fourth time on the year by a score of 8-5 on Friday night.

67's Continue Home Ice Shootout Domination Over Peterborough

For the second time this season, the Ottawa 67’s took a 3-2 shootout decision over divisional rival Peterborough on home ice, earning sole possession of eighth in the Eastern Conference again.

The Ottawa 67’s host the Peterborough Petes for the second time this season.  With a record of 3-0-0-0 and outscoring the Petes 19-7, the 67’s have had a relatively easy time against the Petes.  However, same was said for the Belleville Bulls who they faced last game.  The 67’s fell 4-3 in regulation.  While they nearly made a comeback, they found themselves underestimating the Petes and took an early 3-0 first period deficit.

Four-Goal Bulls Pick Up First Win Of Season In Ottawa

For the third time this season, the Belleville Bulls put up four goals during a game in Ottawa, but for the first time, it was enough to secure the win, holding on to defeat the 67’s 4-3 on Friday night.

After taking a 2-0 series lead back in November, the Ottawa 67’s host the Belleville Bulls for the third time this season.  Last game featured strong outings from several 67’s players including Brendan Bell who earned his first career hattrick his efforts were overshadowed by 5-point games from Dante Salituro and Nevin Guy.

Vande Sompel dominate in 67's 5-2 loss to Gens

Mitchell Vande Sompel was on a mission.  His goal and 4 assists led the Oshawa Generals to a 5-2 victory over the Ottawa 67's Tuesday night in the nation's capital.

The Oshawa Generals are back in town to face the Ottawa 67’s for the third time this season.  The Generals have a 2-0-0-0 series lead winning a game at home and a game on the road. 

The last game against the Gens in Ottawa was a rough one for the 67’s.  Cole Cassels, son of former 67 Andrew Cassels, had a 4 goal night contributing to a 7-1 Gens win.  Defense, discipline and specialty teams were a big issue.  The 67’s allowed 46 shots, 8 powerplays and 4 goals on those 8 powerplays.  Sam Studnicka scored the 67’s lone goal.  Game review here.

67's Drop Second Consecutive Teddy Bear Toss Game, 7-2 to Barrie

Philippe Trudeau did everything in his power to grab a win in his 17th consecutive start, but a late three-goal outburst in the third period for the Barrie Colts put the stamp on a 7-2 road win Sunday afternoon.

The Ottawa 67’s hope to see teddy bears raining down on them early as they host the Barrie Colts in an afternoon matinee.  It is the 67’s annual Teddy Bear Toss game where thousands of teddy bears will get donated to charity.

The Barrie Colts were just one game and one goal short of clinching the J Ross Robertson Cup in the OHL Championships against the London Knights.  A 3-2 game 7 loss cost the Colts a berth into the2013 Memorial Cup tournament.  It is a much different team now, but still boasts a core of players from last season that are hungry for another chance.

Notable depatures

One big loss on the Colts is former starting goaltender Mathias Niederberger who backstopped the team in the last two seasons.  The Colts also lost 3 of their top 5 scorers from last season.  Mark Scheifele, Steven Beyers and Anthony Camara have all moved on from the OHL.  Scheifele has joined the Winnipeg Jets while Camara has joined the Boston Bruins farm club in Providence.  These three players combined for 91 goals and 208 points.

Sitting with 33 points, the Colts are currently 4th in the East only 6 points back of the Sudbury Wolves for 2nd place with a game in hand.  With only 106 goals for, the offense from the graduating players is felt a little.  Despite not a lot of goals, the team is doing well on defense with only 84 goals allowed.  Only three other teams in the OHL have allowed less goals including the first place Erie Otters, first-in-the-East Oshawa Generals and the powerhouse London Knights.

Key returnees

A big part of their defensive success so far has been because of sophomore goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood.  He is currently ranked 6th amongst OHL goaltenders with a goals against average of 2.70.  While they have not scored as many goals as the teams in front of them, the Colts still sit around the middle of the pack.  They have received a lot of offensive support from veteran leaders Andreas Athanasiou, Mitchell Theoret, Zach Hall and Aaron Ekblad.  In fact, those 4 players sit 1-2-3-4 respectively in team scoring.

It is expected to be a big year for Aaron Ekblad.  Coming off captaining a goal medal win at the U-18 Ivan Hlinka tournament earlier this year, Ekblad is geared up for an important season ahead.  After making his debut as an “exceptional status” player, Ekblad is finally set to be selected at the NHL Draft this spring in Philadelphia.  Joining him is sophomore forward Brandon Lemieux who was also a part of that gold medal Ivan Hlinka team.

Newest additions

The Colts have a couple new additions to the lineup. Centre Cordell James and Left winger Kevin Lablanc who are both NHL draft eligible this season.  Joining Cordell and Lablanc is the Colts’ first round selection in the 2013 OHL Priority Selection, Matthew Kreis.  The Colts expect him to become one of the players to watch over the next few seasons.

This is the first of four meetings between the 67’s and Colts. The Colts snapped a 3-game losing streak last night with a convincing 5-1 win over the struggling Belleville Bulls.  Andreas Athanasiou extended his 5-game point streak to 6 games after recording a goal and 2 assists in the win.

The 67’s are coming off a very strong effort against the league’s top team on Friday night falling 2-0 to the Otters.  There were many positives in the game and had many chances to bury a win, but were unable to capitalize while the Otters were.  The 67’s are 10 points back of the Colts for 8th in the East but there are only 13 points separating the 2nd and 8th spot.  The 67’s will look to this game as a must win as every point is crucial.

On a night where the 67’s top line and defensive pairing smothered the Erie Otters’ dynamic duo of Connor McDavid and Andre Burakovsky, it was an Erie powerplay that saw the top lines separated, leading to the winning goal in a 2-0 Ottawa loss.
